On 3 October 1943, SS Empire Activity was on voyage from Botwood to the United Kingdom laden with zinc concentrates when wrecked on Peckford Reef, one nautical mile south of the Peckford Island, Southeast of Fogo Island.
Originally built at Liverpool in 1919 as the SS Belgian, she was a 122m, 5,287-ton steamship. She was then sold in 1934 becoming Amelia Lauro for the Lauro Lines of Naples Italy. On 10 June 1940 the Ministry of War Transport seized the vessel and renamed her Empire Activity in 1941.
