On 26 June 1901, the British ocean liner SS Lusitania ran aground in the fog at Seal Cove, about three miles south of Renews. Unlike the well-known RMS Lusitania sunk by a German submarine in the First World War, none of the 444 passengers and crew aboard the SS Lusitania were lost.
