The unescorted SS Dayrose was torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat U-552 on 14 January 1942 in the Battle of the Atlantic just southwest of Cape Race while on voyage from St. John’s to Portland, Maine. The 119m British steam merchant, built in 1928, had a complement of 42 onboard. Only four crew members (two by each destroyer) were picked up by USS Ericsson and USS Stack and landed at Argentia.
