Swedish Steamer Argos

ASHORE IN PLACENTIA BAY.

The Swedish steamer Argos, which landed a cargo of coal at Argentia for the railway and sailed last evening for Miramichi, is ashore at Cat Island, near Burin with her forepart under water and is likely to be a total loss. The crew of 27 men are safe. The first intimation of disaster t to the ship was contained in a message received at 3 o’clock this morning from St. Pierre, by Manager Saunders, of the Anglo. The Deputy Minister of Customs received some particulars this forenoon in a message from the Sub-Collector at Burin. The cable reads as follows: “Swedish steamer Argos. 1575 tons register, in ballast for Miramichi, ashore at Cat Island. Forepart under water and expect ship will be total loss. Crew of 27 safe.” Magistrate Hollett, of Burin, has also reported to the Department of Justice in a message which reads: “S.S. Argos, Bingtsson, master, struck on the east point of Cat Island last night. All crew rescued. Ship will probably be a total loss.” The Argos, formerly the Argo, is a ship of 1563 tons nett, and 2554 gross. She was built in 1898 by R. Napier & Sons, Glasgow, and is 310 feet long, 44.2 wide and 2014 feet in depth.
